Hiring and Outsourcing - Want to know how and when?
February 8th, 2007
Yesterday marked the completion of my newly renovated home-office.
I had my basement turned from useless storage into an office that can now hold up to six employees.
I am excited about this transition for my business as I will be able to grow quicker with employees helping to share the workload.
Up until now all of my employees worked remotely (I have seven right now, and I am hiring three more next week). This has been a bit of a communication head-ache, but that problem will now be mostly solved.
On top of that, I will have two people working on customer support, which means that we will be able to provide even better support than we have been.
You might be wondering - “If you are running an Internet business, why would you even need employees? Isn’t the whole point of having an Internet business so that you can work alone in your own home?”
My answer to that: “No!”
Honestly I hate working alone. I hate working for somebody else even more, which is why I started my own business.
However, with most successful businesses you will need the help of others, whether employees or other companies whom you can outsource to.
I have gone through the hiring process several times, and will be doing it even more this year (I will probably have close to 20 employees by the end of the year if all goes well).
I eventually plan on moving out of my home-office and into a much larger space.
Here is my question to you - would you be interested enough in learning when and how I hire so that you can apply some of the same ideas to your business?
You don’t need to be a multi-million dollar business in order to hire. I hired my first employee after only 6 months of business, and I gotta tell you, it made a world of a difference to me.
Let me know if you are interested (or not) by posting a comment on this blog. If there is enough interest I will create a free report on how I go through the process.
Thanks!
Matthew Glanfield
P.S. I’ll post some photos of my new office here soon so that you can see the “base of operations.”

Mark McGimpsey Says:
Hi Matthew,
I for one would like to hear more.
I imagine the biggest question for
the person who reaches the stage of
outsourcing is, ‘exactly how to you
determine on elance, rentacoder, or
guru who is suitable to do the job,
and how much should you be prepared
to pay (or offer) for the job to be
completed to your satisfaction?’
I would also think that most Internet
Marketers who have found someone, would
jealously guard that information, and
would not therefore be willing to make
‘recommendations’, or name names.
In these respects your report would be a
valuable resource if you nailed these
‘insider methods’ on how to find such a
reliable person for yourself.
Best wishes,
Mark McGimpsey

I would like to read your comments about hiring employees. Which tasks are you deligating to employees and which tasks do you plan to do?
Kevin Chartrand Says:
Very interesting the whole concept of working smarter instead of working harder is a problem all self employed indivuals have regardless of the industry they are involved in. My start-up company is facing the same type of issues. Outsource or direct hire? Both have there pro’s and con’s. A resource like this would definelty be valuable.

Kevin Chartrand

Matthew,
Yes, we want to grow but it is the fear of the unknown that holds us back. Please share your process and expertise with us.
Keep up the good work!

Looks like your business is really expanding. Well done!
What are your new employees going to be doing?
How do you stop them from stealing your secrets and setting up on their own?
Peter Says:
I am starting a new membership website and need to find some good people to outsource some of my tasks such as copywriting, graphics, and script/web developer. I for one would love to hear more on how to hire/outsource quality people.
One other thing Matthew, it would also be helpful to know where to look for them and how much we should expect to pay for typical tasks such as site graphics, copywriting, traffic, etc. Thank you.

Being a Husband and Wife Team we are continually saying Gee what if We get so big as will have to leave the house and get a Business Office … Gee the proverbial back into the Rat Race commute that would be for a stay at home mom
Then comes our house and property is big enough to expand and build an additional office who would we allow in the inner circle hopefully fun people only with Team Spirit thats who
Matthew I think if wanting to expand on the Business thing and growth issues … information needing to be touched on is
1.Business overheads ie Office Space Telephones Office Equipment
2.Start Up Costs Business License … Advertising … Employee Payroll … Employee Liabilty Insurance
3.Employee Benefits Health Vacations Compensation or Bonus Plan
4.Questions for Pre-Employment Expectations of Employment Employee Mediation statement or Means of Arbitration then comes Human Resources also Equality in Workspace
These are just some of the things if looking into a Business are basic’s most 1st time Business owners do not take into account and blindly jump in without covering themselves also there are State and Federal Laws that Govern Business Practices that vary from State to State also Internationally
That is why so many Companies today are out sourcing to Foreign Countries to circumvent the Laws that protect our workers here in the United States
So Yes Matthew if you can shed any light on how to make this transition we’d be glad to see the plan
Jer&Sooz
PS We might want to remind You we chose an Online Internet Business so as to have the Freedom to work and play with the Freedom working at home only provides and wish to network with others who also do as we do … wouldn’t it be nice to have a Central Meeting Place in Cities to Help Others instead of the incurred additional costs of Overhead Office Space
Derrick Says:
Hey Matt,
I’d love to see the report. It’s hard to find quality copywriters and programmers on Elance without paying several thousand dollars. And in the end, I still have to put the finishing touches on.
I have so many half-finished projects sitting on the shelf…it’s ridiculous.

Yes, I am interested. I am a newbie and intend to outsource all of the customer support and technical things. I would like to grow though and am open to all ideas that would grow the business.
Elitsa Asenova Says:
Hello Matthew,
I think that Outsourcing is quite on demand today.
What’s more, it’s obvious that searching for liable people working for you could be very hard process.
It’s great to know your thoughts and provisions.
All the best,
Elitsa
Kyle Says:
Hi Matthew,
My question is why do you need 20 employees? Seems a little extreme for an Affiliate/Internet Marketing business. I personally found that having a lot employees made it feel like I was back in the rat race again just in a different role. I went back to working by myself in my home, and I did close to 10 million last year with just a few outsourced help. I would be interested to hear why you want or need so many employees…
Matthew Says:
Hey Kyle,
That’s a great question.
The direction I am heading with my business is not solely with affiliate marketing. I am also developing a software development division along with a web design division.
For most people just looking to build a million dollar business around information marketing you won’t need that many employees (probably not even half that many).
I will cover a lot of this in my upcoming report.
Thanks for the question! (And for all the other great questions and comments too)

Hey Matthew!
Your faithful follower and fan here,….The “Crazy Ex-Enron Guy”,..Alain (Alan) Diza…
Kudos on the new office, Bro! That’s excellent!
With expansion like that, obviously business is going stellar for you!
Way Cool!
I was just reading a post/email somewhere from none other than the great Rich Shefren of StrategicProfits.com, who mentioned something to the effect of,…”The less work you do inside
your online business, the MORE money you
can make”…and that “ironically enough, the more freedom you have from your business, the more money you’ll make!”
….Hence the beauty of outsourcing!
Mattew, I can’t wait to read your report on the topic, as I most definitely have that in my business plans.
My most recent project involved outsourcing on content generation via one of my niche blog sites at:

Money well spent and “freed” time spent developing expansions, like your new office, Mattew!

Thanks for the response. This makes a lot more sense. I would also be interested to hear more about your software development and website services as I am currently looking for a vendor of such services. Thanks.
James L Font Says:
hello this does sound good specially for me that I’m so new to the internet buisness that just one person would not have the time to show me what it takes to start really making some money at internet marketing.

Tim Norton Says:
Hi Matt,
I had no idea you had so many employees, and I personally can’t wait to have that many people working for me. I’m sure there are headaches but the extra freedom is probably so worth it. I know someone who went from bankrupt to earning $30,000/mo, and he did it by building a business with employees.
You are one of my most admired IM friends, you are dedicated, persevering, and honest. Thanks for all that you do!
I would be very interested in hearing about your thought process in hiring. I will be adding some part time help soon and any insights you have would be of great interest to me.
Thanks again,Tim

Hi Matthew,
Sure, it definitely will benefit many many of us. I’m still clueless when it comes to outsourcing the workload. How, When, Whom should I turn to etc.
Looking forward to your free report on this matter.
(if only you decide to write one, ghee)
Leny Lim Says:
Oh Yes Matt!
By all means, I would love to get and read the free report on how the process like. I’m a newbie, I don’t mind at all, how much you’re going to pay me, so long I’m learning from you. That’s the best part, it’s my honour to have a golden opportunity to learn from one of the big Guru in the world. So, please let me know what I’m suppose to do as to assist you in the business. By the way, A big Congratulation to you - as always. Yes, I would like to see the pictures as well. Thank’s and all the best from me.
Alfred Ko Says:
Hi Matthew,
This is exactly the answer I am looking for now.
I am creating a membership site now, my partner and I are doing all the work at the moment, and I now decided to hire employees to ease my workload.
I have created a few websites in the past, I hired 7 designers before (up to date) to do some simple web design. And you know what, 6 out of 7 of them turned me down and gave me lots of problems. Those are just simple task. I am wondering how on earth can I hire a full time employee to handle the more complex job?
I have read some “Secrets of Outsourcing” ebook out there, and the contents are outlined in “theory” only.
So yeah, I would like to hear from you, exactly how you go through the process and your real life experience on outsourcing. There’s a “7-dollar buzz” lately, I suggest you could sell the report for $7. =P
